How You Can Help

On Saturday morning, April 30, 2011, a fire at Hope House, 14 Montgomery Street in Concord, caused considerable damage to the Friendly Kitchen. We first hoped we could rebuild on Montgomery Street, but circumstances forced us to seek a new home. In Spring 2012 we received approval from the City of Concord to construct a new building on South Commercial Street, just off Interstate 393, in Concord.

The new building is about 5,800 SF and can feed 120 people. It provides both indoor and outdoor seating and is completely accessible for people with disabilities. The one-floor building features an up-to-date commercial kitchen, making it easier for volunteers to prepare meals and clean up afterward. It also has ample storage area for donated foods. It offers free onsite parking in a well-lit landscaped area.

The Friendly Kitchen’s building was destroyed by fire in April 2011, but it never missed a meal – it has continued to serve the needy from temporary locations around the city. Through the financial support of hundreds of people and organizations in the greater Concord community, we were able to continue operations, find a new location, and build a wonderful new home that opened on December 27, 2012.

We opened with the help of a construction loan, which we would like to pay off and eliminate monthly mortgage expenses. We also have ongoing operational expenses (such as heat, water, sewer, and very limited salaries). You can help by contributing to either of these funds.

Additional Ways to Help the Friendly Kitchen

For more than three decades the Friendly Kitchen has relied on people like you to help feed those who do not have the means to feed themselves. Though faced with increasing operating costs and an increasing number of hungry people in the Concord area, the many volunteer hours and donations by individuals and local businesses are helping to keep the door to the Friendly Kitchen open to the homeless and hungry.

One woman brings by eggs from her chickens on a regular basis. Once a month an older couple brings by a grocery bag of coffee, sugar, beverages – whatever has been on our “items needed” list. One couple comes by a few times a year with over $300 worth of things from Sam’s Club for us.

Whether you are able to assist financially, provide needed food, or would like to encourage your business to become a partner, your help is very welcome!

Donations Drop-Off: Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday between 10:30am & 6:00pm. If that is not convenient for you please let us know and we can make other arrangements.
